December 20, 2007, Kuala Lumpur: The
Council of SJTU-GHCC lead by Chairman Prof Dr Zhang Shengkun
and Vice Chairman Datuk PY Lai and members Feng Jiu Ling,
Wangjpeng and Xu Belei paid a courtesy call to deputy
Minister of Higher Education YB Datuk Ong Tee Keat in
Kuala Lumpur.The group exchanged ideas on higher education,
and concluded with Prof Zhang and Datuk PY Lai inviting
the deputy minister to visit Shanghai and Suzhou.

December 20, 2007, Kuala Lumpur: SJTU-GHCC
concludes an MOU with UniKL in Kuala Lumpur to bring Hanyu
education to its main campus in the city center. UniKL
is a member of the MARA group of universities specializing
in engineering studies. SJTU-GHCC will open with a UniKL-Global
Hanyu Center to provide short course on Mandarin proficiency
to UniKL students, MARA staff members, executives from
the KL downtown area. Classes are expected to begin in
Q1 of 2008. Prof Dato Dr Abdul Hakim Juri, President/CEO
of UniKL signs with the MOU with Director Foong Wai Fong,
while Prof Dr Zhang Shengkun witnessed the MOU. Prof Dr
Abdul Talib Othman, Dr Sulaiman Sajilan, Dr Raja Aziz
Raja Maarof, Ms Lydia Fiza, Prof Wang Jipeng and Madam
Xu Belei attended the ceremony.

December 10, 2007, Beijing: Director
Foong Wai Fong represented SJTU-GHCC at the annual Confucius
Institute Conference and Exhibition in Beijing recently.
The conference brought together over 100 Confucius Institute
from around the world to exchange experience on how to
effectively bring Hanyu education to the world. Ms Foong
gave an interview to Shantong Satellite Television on
the Malaysian Experience. SJTU-GHCC put up an exhibition
of its experience and results for the year 2006 &
7 at the conference.

November 18, 2007, Shanghai & Suzhou:
Minister of Higher Education of Malaysia Datuk Mustapa
Mohamed visited GHCC’s parent Global EduTech Management
Group (GEM) and its Campus at Dushu Lake Higher Education
Park in Suzhou. The honorable minister planted a tree
dedicated to HKU SPACE Global College, a sister college
of the Global Hanyu & Culture Center. Datuk Mustapa
also spoke to Malaysian students and teachers in Suzhou.
In the Higher Minister’s delegation are top leaders
from the Ministry of Higher Education and Malaysian universities.
The distinguished delegation includes Dr Mohamed Nasser
Mohamed Noor, Director, Marketing and International Education
Division, Dr Ramli Bin Hassan, Under Secretary, Ministry
of Higher Education, Emeritus Professor Tan Sri Dato’
Dr Syed Jalaludin Syed Salim, Chairman of Bank Kerjasama
Rakyat Malaysia and Chairman of Taylor’s College,
Datuk Loy Teik Ngan, President of Taylor’s College,
Datuk Rafiah Salim, Vice Chancellor of the University
of Malaya, Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Noh Dalimin, Vice Chancellor
of University Sabah Malaysia, Encik Saroni Judi, Vice
President (Business Development) UNITAR.
While in Shanghai, Datuk Mustapa and key members of his
delegation had a breakfast meeting with Professor Dr Zhang
Shengkun, Vice Chairman of the Academic Committee and
Dean of School of International Education of Shanghai
Jiaotong University.

November 12, 2007, Yangsuo: Students
at the Zhang YiMou School of Art gave a private performance
to Director Foong of GHCC during her recent visit to Yangsuo.
These students are recruited from the poorest regions
in China, such as Kwangsi, Henan and Guizhou. These regions
are also known for the vocal abilities of the minority
groups. From a very young age, these children were recruited
into a boarding school in Yangsuo to be trained as performers
for the performance Impressions Liu Sanjie. The school
takes its name from the famous Chinese director Zhang
YiMou, known for many award winning films. This is the
only Zhang Yi Mou School of Art in China.

18 wonderful kids of 4 to 6 years old attended a 10
day Holiday camp conducted by Wei Wei and Ou Laoshi of
Global Hanyu and Peter n Jane Kindergarten at the new
Mutiara Damansara Kindergarten. The kids went through
a total of 60 hours of Hanyu immersion program, they were
exposed to several songs, dance and handicrafts as well
as learnt 24 characters and 7 situational conversation.
It is amazing how the children of this age could be so
patient and attended the camp with enthusiasm. Parents
and teachers celebrated the completion with a presentaiton
by the children and an exhibition of their caligraphy
work.

Executive Director Ms Foong Wai Fong hosted former Dutch
Prime Minister H E Rudd Lubbers in an event on 4th Generation
Port in Shanghai jointly with a member of the GEM Group,
the First Light Institute of Finance and Economics. The
former Dutch Prime Minister is a special guest to the
20th Anniversary Celebration of the Rotterdam
Commercial Representative Office (RCRO) in Shanghai. Mr
Lubber took time off his busy schedule to spend time with
the GEM Group's First Light Insitute of Finance and Economics
and spoke to key representatives from the port and harbour
sector in the Yangtze River Delta. The theme of the discussion
centered on sustainability and Rottterdam's positioning
to transform to a green port. Mr Lubbers pointed out that
those companies who put sustainability high on the agenda
are also very profitable companies and that global warming
is no longer an issue to be debated, rather companies,
cities and governemnts need to develop a response to the
threats from global warming. H E Lubbers has been a pioneer
in the field of Sustainability and had tremendous experience
dealing with energy issues. While serving as Holland's
prime minister, he presided over the first Oil Crisis
and had never stop in exploring on energy issues after
he left office. He currently heads the Institute of New
Energy in Holland.

November 8-9, 2007, Director of Global
Hanyu & Culture Center FOONG WAI FONG participated
at the Strategic Dialogue of the China-ASEAN Cultural
Industry Forum in Nanning, China. Ms Foong was a member
of a 4 member expert panel to dialgoue on the concepts,
resources, strategy for coopration between ASEAN and China
Culutral Industry.
This annual forum is jointly organized by the departmnet
for Cultural Industry of the Ministry of Culture, P.R.China,
Bureau for External Cultural Relations of the Ministry
of Culture, P.R China and Cultural Department of Guangxi
Zhuang Autonomous Region of China. Some 400 participants
of Government leaders, industry, academic and business
leaders attended the 2-day forum which was held in Nanning,
the capital of Guangxi Province.
Ms Foong joined experts at the outstanding Live-Cultural
Performance in Yangsuo, Guilin entitled
Impressions LiuShajie. Impressions Liu Shajie is the most
successful Live performance set in an outdoor stage on
the Lijiang River, where 600 farmeres and fishermen performed
ethnic dances and folk songs, without any sound amplification,
over a 1.8 km stretch of the most beautiful segment of
the Lijiang River, and a backdrop of the most scenic mountains
in Guilin. Impressions Liu Shajie is a recommended MUST
SEE for anyone visiting this part of China for its artistic
impact and innovation. For students of design and cultural
industries, this is to date the most successful project
which in 4 years has grown from an audience size of 300,000
to 500,000, to 700,000 and expected to top 1,000,000 in
2007. The show brings in a gross revenue from ticket sales
of RMB150million in 2007.

July - August, Some 35 Chinese broadcasters
and news editors of Malaysia's Radio(Ai FM) and Televison
Station(RTM 2) started a six weeks training with our Professors
in Angkasapuri, Kuala Lumpur during the summer period
of July and August.
This training was specially commissioned by the Malaysian
Government for the continuing education enhancement of
the broadcasters and news editors.
Two Associate Professors from Shanghai Jiaotong University
were in-charge of this training, they have group sessions
as well as one-to-one sessions with the professors.

July 8-4, 2007, 130 EMBA and Executives
from around the world joined the Close up on the New China
Program. The program is jointly organized by Global Hanyu
and the Mendoza School of Business of the University of
Notre Dame. The group will use northern China, starting
with Shanghai as their travelling classroom to understand
the laetest developments in China. This program will cover
Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi, Kunshan, Zhouzhuang, Beijing and
Tianjin. The highlights of the trip include a dinner party
on board the Huangpu River Cruise, travelling to Wuxi
on China's high speed railway. In Beijing, the Group would
visit Lenovo and the 300+ years old Chinese Traditional
medical shop Tongrentang.

May 13-20, 2007, A Group of 30 Participants
from Barry University, USA joined the Close Up On The
New China program, a collaboration between The GEM Group
and the Graduate School of Business of Barry University.
This Group photo was taken at the Humble Administrator's
Garden in Suzhou, where participants tried on a special
souvenir T-Shirt (Limited Edition) that bears the slogan
of paramount leader Deng Xiao Peng. The Group will be
in the Yangtze River delta for 8 days, while some will
do an extension to Beijing.

April 12, 2007, A group of students
from Thailand's Kasetsart University Laboratory School
began their Learn Hanyu & Chinese Culture Summer Camp
at our Suzhou Campus at Dushu Lake Higher Education Park.
Accompanied by teachers and staff, and led by the School
Principal, these students will begin a 42 program in the
Yangtze River where they will undergone a comprehensive
program in Hanyu and Chinese Learning. Students will attend
intensive Language and cutlure classes during the week,
and make field trips to famous cultural and landscape
sites in the Yangtse River delta during the weekends.
Among the sites they will be visiting include Hendian,
the film city in Hangzou, Shanghai and many other famous
sites around Suzhou and Shanghai. At the end of the program,
students would have been exposed to a total of 110 hours
of Hanyu and Culture learning.

March 21, 2007, Director Foong Wai
Fong delivered the closing keynote address at the China
Fashion Forum in Beijing with the theme “A New Era
for Chinese Fashion: Strategy Ahead.” The China
Fashion Forum is an industrial forum for China’s
fashion and clothing industry. The 2007 annual meeting
is the 12th in its history, this annual get-together brings
together designers, entrepreneurs and investors to the
forum to discuss issues and strategy related to the development
of the industry. China has the world’s largest textile
industry, exporting some 70% of global supply. However
the clothing and textile industry in China is among industries

March 5, 2007, 77 participants from
the Mendoza School of Business of the University of Notre
Dame USA started their 10 days journey on a program that
gives them a Close Up On The New China. Participants were
presented with a special limited edition T-Shirt that
bears a design of the paramount leader Deng Xiao Peng's
slogan " To get rich is glorious." Participants
wear the T-Shirt to pose for a group photo. This special
T-Shirt is made to commemorate the significance of this
shift in thought that started the process of reform and
opening in China.

December 22, 2006, Council Chairman
Prof Dr Zhang Shengkun and delegation visited Penang and
was received by Chairman of The GEM Group, Dato PY Lai
and Director Goh Nai Kui, who is also deputy Chairman
of the Malaysian-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
While in Penang Prof Zhang's delegation visited Kolej
Disted Stamford (KDS) and received a briefing from its
Vice President Dr W K Ko and his team. The delegation
also visited Dr Sun Yat Sen's Memorial and the Cheong
Fatt Chee Mansion, a UNESCO heritage award conservation
project on the island. The group left with very good impressions
of Penang.
SJTU-GHCC will explore with Kolej Disted Stamford to open
a Global Hanyu Center in Penang to help increase the capabilities
of teaching Hanyu (Standard Putonghua) in Penang.

December 21, 2006, Prof Zhang Shengkun,
Council Chairman of SJTU-GHCC led a delegation to visit
the leadership of KUSTEM of Terengganu. Kustem is the
leading higher education in Terengganu. This visit is
the official visit of the leadership of SJTU-GHCC to the
north eastern Islamic state of Peninsula Malaysia. Among
the many things discussed at the meeting included SJTU-GHCC
to help Kustem build up its standard mandarin teaching
capabilities and to arrange for Malaysian students to
carry out short term study visits in China.

December 21, 2006, Prof Zhang Shengkun,
Council Chairman of SJTU-GHCC accompanied by director
of UNICO ( a shareholder of The GEM Group) Dato Tok Teng
Sai attended dinner meeting with members of the Chinese
community in Kuala Terengganu. In a cordial and friendly
atmosphere, Prof Zhang and Prof Wang Jiping talked about
the development in China and how SJTU-GHCC could assist
the local community to further develop their mandarin
teaching and learning capabilities.

to discuss collaboration on a joint Master Degree program
on Chinese Language. Attending the meeting is Professor

SJTU-GHCC is Director Foong Wai Fong, Vice Director Madam

Lion Group and Parkson China) at his office. Representing
the Chamber were Mr Tan Kah Hee, Chairman of Hai O, Dato
Tok Seng Chai, Director of UNICO Holdings, Kung Ling Long,
Member of HR Committee ACCCIM, Dr Leong Kah Hin, Committee
Member of HR Committee, ACCCIM. SJTU-GHCC explores the
setting up of Global Hanyu Centers with the 13 Chambers
of Commerce and Industry throughout the country.

December 19, 2006, Council Chairman
Prof Zhang Shengkun and Vice Chairman Dato PY Lai launched
the Confucius Institute at the Global Hanyu & Culture
Center in Kuala Lumpur. This officially launches the cooperation
between the office of Chinese Language Council International
of The People's Republic of China (Hanban) , Shanghai
Jiaotong University and Global Hanyu & Culture College,
a member of the GEM Group. The Confucius Institute is
a worldwide network of Chinese language and culture promotion
centers set up under the auspices of Hanban. SJTU- GHCC
KL joins the rest of the 127 Confucius Institute around
the world in the promotion of Chinese language and culture.

2006. The Forum was chaired by former Prime Minster

Oct 29 - Nov 8, 2006,
SJTU-GHCC organized the Chinese Film Festival with the
theme Classics from the last 100 Years of Chinese Cinema.
The 10 day festival in Malaysia was presented by the
Embassy of the People's Republic of China with the support
of the Ministry of Culture, Art and Heritage, Malaysia.
Supported by key community organizations and the Malaysia
China Friendship Association, the event was organized
to commemorate the 15th anniversary of China-Asean dialogue
partnership. Some 20,000 people turned out at 20 screening
centers located throughout Peninsular Malaysia. Malaysia
and Chinese media gave the event substantial coverage.

GHCC hosted a group of 40 MBA students from the Mendoza
School of Business of Notre Dame University in Suzhou
for the Close Up On the New China program. This is our
last group for year 2006, making the total number of
students hosted by GHCC to our popular Close Up on The

Sept 16 - Oct 7, 2006
in partnership with MintaMaju-Global Hanyu Center, 20
SJTU-GHCC TEACHERS provided language training for 698
cadet officers of the Royal Malaysian Police at the
Pulapol Training Center in Bahao, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia.
These cadet officers went through a total of 36 hours
of basic Hanyu training which helped them master basic
Hanyu which will be useful for them when dealing with
Chinese visitors and other Chinese Malaysians.

Sept 18, 2006,
Teacher Yan Wanling gave a trial class to 20 senior
officers of the Royal Malaysian Police at GEM Beach
Resort, Kuala Trengganu. At the invitation of the Police
Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Yan Laoshi travelled to
Kuala Trengganu together with Director W F Foong and
Consultant Zainol to give 25 senior police officers
in charge of various states a 2 hour experience into
the Chinese language and culture. Malaysia has some
80,000 members of the police force, and the government
has included Hanyu as one of the compulsory language
for the police force.

Putonghua Classes for students at KPTM, sponsored by
the GHCC Foundation. A total of 120 students from the
Kolej Polytech MARA undergone a month-long intensive
training on Putonghua by four teachers from our Center.
The students were very enthusiastic. At the end of the
program some 80% of the students who attended have committed
to continue their studies.

Kuala Lumpur, housed in a Class A Building Wisma Selangor
Dredging’s East Block, sharing the same environment
with the long-established British Council, SJTU-GHCC
opens its resource center and language learning facility
to the public. To date over 3000 people have made enquiries
at our Center, and over 2000 people have gone through
our classes, seminars and activities.
