News--Kuala Lumpur 8.08.8th August 2008: At the peak of the night, some 500 people gathered at the lobby of Jaya 33 where the Shanghai Jiao tong University-Global Hanyu Center is located. Members of the public, students, staffs, tenants of the complex of various ethnic origins had a great time celebrating the opening of the Beijing Olympics. The crowd cheered and engaged themselves as the performance unfolds in the national stadium in Beijing.

The event was organized by Shanghai Jiaotong University-Global Hanyu & Culture Center in partnership with the Management of Jaya 33 and Pahlawan Volunteers. The food outlets in the Complex; Italian Kitchen, Vietnamese Kitchen and Jaya Grocer Bakery all served complimentary food to the attendees. The Official sponsor of the games, Coca Cola provided free drinks for the evening. The crowd was enthusiastic and watched the entire opening ceremony that went from 8pm to midnight.

Earlier a complimentary Hanyu lesson was held at the Center for those who are interested. A total of 28 Chinese characters related to the Olympics were taught by Chang Xin Laoshi.

吉隆坡2008年8月8日讯- 为见证北京奥运会开幕式,大约五百人出席了由上海交通大学-全球汉语中心,Jaya 33与Pahlawan网络自愿团体主办的“让我们与北京奥运一同狂欢”晚会。出席者聚集在Jaya 33大厅一同见证奥运开幕式。大家的欢呼声不逊色于在北京开幕式的现场。

当晚, Jaya 33的租户如Italian Kitchen, Vietnamese Kitchen 和Jaya Grocer Bakery 也参与其盛,赞助食物。 奥运会指定赞助商可口可乐赞助了888罐可口可乐予当晚的出席者。观看奥运开幕式的人潮一直聚集至午夜12点30分。

在当晚的奥运开幕式前,来自全球汉语中心的畅老师也为学生上了一堂“奥运汉语课”。

May 16, 2008, Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) in a lead to set the new standard for Mandarin for the Country is working with Shanghai Jiaotong University-Global Hanyu & Culture Center (SJTU-GHCC) to provide comprehensive training to all its broadcasters and editors in the Mandarin Section to make the transition to Standard Putonghua.

Second batch training was held from 14 April 2008 to 16 May 2008 at Institute Penyiaran Tun Abdul Razak (IPTAR). This second training was conduct by Associate Professor Dr Hu Jian Jun from Shanghai Jiaotong University. This six weeks' Mandarin Training was given to 35 staffs from AiFM, Suara Malaysia, TV News and Radio News.

In Malaysia, the Chinese language does not align fully with the international standard; and in view of the rising importance of China on the global stage, and more and more countries are adopting the Chinese Putonghua Standard, RTM is working with SJTU-GHCC in a series of training programs for its broadcasters. The series was started in 2007 August, and there is one more training program will take place in 2008, July by Professor Dr Wang Ji Ping from Shanghai Jiaotong University.

The Certificate Presentation Ceremony of this training was held on 16 May 2008 at Dewan Cendiakiawan, IPTAR. Dato' Haji Abdul Rahman Hamid, Director General of Department of Broadcasting, presented the certificates to 35 students.

February 17, 2008, The Shanghai Jiaotong University-Global Hanyu & Culture Center played host to over 100 students, parents and friends in a Chinese New Year Tea party at the Center's New Center at Jaya 33. To welcome the year of the Rat and to share with students the customs of celebrating the "Spring Festival," an interesting program was created for those who attended. A tea party, with Chinese musician playing the Yang Qin and Flute, as well as a Calligraphy demonstration was held.

The occasion was held in conjunction with the Scholarship presentation ceremony for the first batch of Undergraduate students heading for the Bachelor of Art program with Shanghai Jiaotong University. Unico Education Fund provided the first batch of scholarship for this group; on hand to hand out the letter of award is Tan Sri Lim Guan Teik, Chairman of Unico Education Fund.

Besides, SJTU-GHCC and Asia e-University today signed a MOU to set up Hanyu classes in this soon to be launched New University in Kuala Lumpur.

Representing Asia e-University was Prof.Dr. Hairudin Harun, the Deputy President of Asia e-University, who was also joined by Professor Zakaria Ismail, the AEU's Vice President of Admissions and Assessments.

SJTU-GHCC was represented by its Founder and Acting President Mdm Foong Wai Fong.

Asia e-University is a dual-mode multinational university set in Asia, by Asians under the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD).

Its establishment is an initiative of Malaysia, as a prime mover for e-education, with the support of the 30 ACD member countries as confirmed by the Islamabad 2005 and DOHA 2006 ACD Ministerial Meetings.

By June, the parties will begin to offer Hanyu classes to students and institutional clients of the University.

January 5, 2008, Teachers and staff of GHCC met for an afternoon tea at the elegant Carcosa Sri Negara in Kuala Lumpur. GHCC completes a busy year registering a total of 188 individual students and several group trainings of over 300 students. GHCC management treated staff and teachers to a quiet afternoon tea at the prestigious Carcosa Sri Negara drawing room to rest and relax. Carcosa Sri Negara was the former residence of the British High Commissioner in Malaya and was used as the command center for the British Empire in Southeast Asia. The beautiful Anglo-style buildings is located up the serene hill clusters in the heart of Kuala Lumpur's Lake Gardens. The GHCC team had a interesting and enjoyable afternoon.

January 2008, A group of 30 Primary School Chinese Teachers at SJKC Yak Chee in Puchong area in Kuala Lumpur started a special 20 hours Program on Chinese Phonetics with our senior teacher Liu Shan. The teachers will learn correct pronouncation, understand Chinese tones, and how to make the transition between Huayu to Puthonghua.

December 19, 2007, PutraJaya: Professor Zhang Shengkun Council Chairman of SJTU-GHCC and Director Foong Wai Fong had discussion with the leadership of UNITAR in Kuala Lumpur discussing a collaboration to bring degree program on Hanyu Teaching to UNITAR Malaysia. UNITAR President/CEO Prof Datuk Dr. Mohd. Zabid Abdul Rahid, Encik Saroni Judi, Prof Dato dr. Mohamed Mahyuddin Mohamed Dahan, Deputy President (Academic and Student Affairs) and the SJTU-GHCC delegation had a fruitful meeting in Marriot Hotel, Putrajaya. Prof Zhang earlier called on the Chairman of Tun Abdul Razak Education Foundation (Yayasan Pintar) and the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri MohdNajib Tun Abdul Razak, Minister of Higher Education Datuk Mustapa Mohamed and Minister of Education Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein during the launch the UNITAR-Bank Rakyat-Babson School of Entrepreneurship at the Marriot Hotel.

December 20, 2007, UNICO Holdings Education Fund allocated RM1million in scholarship support to the SJTU Bachelor of Hanyu Teaching Program in a MOU signing ceremony between SJTU-GHCC and Unico Education Fund. UNICO Education Fund is represented by its Chairman Tan Sri Lim Guan Teik and committee members Datuk Tok Seng Chai, Mr Mew Jin Seng and Secretary Loh Hang Kwong. This scholarship fund will help Malaysian students to study for a 3 to 4 year Bachelor Degree program at Shanghai Jiao tong University in Shanghai. Details of application see attached announcement.

December 20, 2007, Kuala Lumpur: The Council of SJTU-GHCC lead by Chairman Prof Dr Zhang Shengkun and Vice Chairman Datuk PY Lai and members Feng Jiu Ling, Wangjpeng and Xu Belei paid a courtesy call to deputy Minister of Higher Education YB Datuk Ong Tee Keat in Kuala Lumpur.The group exchanged ideas on higher education, and concluded with Prof Zhang and Datuk PY Lai inviting the deputy minister to visit Shanghai and Suzhou.

December 20, 2007, Kuala Lumpur: SJTU-GHCC concludes an MOU with UniKL in Kuala Lumpur to bring Hanyu education to its main campus in the city center. UniKL is a member of the MARA group of universities specializing in engineering studies. SJTU-GHCC will open with a UniKL-Global Hanyu Center to provide short course on Mandarin proficiency to UniKL students, MARA staff members, executives from the KL downtown area. Classes are expected to begin in Q1 of 2008. Prof Dato Dr Abdul Hakim Juri, President/CEO of UniKL signs with the MOU with Director Foong Wai Fong, while Prof Dr Zhang Shengkun witnessed the MOU. Prof Dr Abdul Talib Othman, Dr Sulaiman Sajilan, Dr Raja Aziz Raja Maarof, Ms Lydia Fiza, Prof Wang Jipeng and Madam Xu Belei attended the ceremony.

December 10, 2007, Beijing: Director Foong Wai Fong represented SJTU-GHCC at the annual Confucius Institute Conference and Exhibition in Beijing recently. The conference brought together over 100 Confucius Institute from around the world to exchange experience on how to effectively bring Hanyu education to the world. Ms Foong gave an interview to Shantong Satellite Television on the Malaysian Experience. SJTU-GHCC put up an exhibition of its experience and results for the year 2006 & 7 at the conference.

November 18, 2007, Shanghai & Suzhou: Minister of Higher Education of Malaysia Datuk Mustapa Mohamed visited GHCC’s parent Global EduTech Management Group (GEM) and its Campus at Dushu Lake Higher Education Park in Suzhou. The honorable minister planted a tree dedicated to HKU SPACE Global College, a sister college of the Global Hanyu & Culture Center. Datuk Mustapa also spoke to Malaysian students and teachers in Suzhou. In the Higher Minister’s delegation are top leaders from the Ministry of Higher Education and Malaysian universities. The distinguished delegation includes Dr Mohamed Nasser Mohamed Noor, Director, Marketing and International Education Division, Dr Ramli Bin Hassan, Under Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Emeritus Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Syed Jalaludin Syed Salim, Chairman of Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia and Chairman of Taylor’s College, Datuk Loy Teik Ngan, President of Taylor’s College, Datuk Rafiah Salim, Vice Chancellor of the University of Malaya, Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Noh Dalimin, Vice Chancellor of University Sabah Malaysia, Encik Saroni Judi, Vice President (Business Development) UNITAR.

While in Shanghai, Datuk Mustapa and key members of his delegation had a breakfast meeting with Professor Dr Zhang Shengkun, Vice Chairman of the Academic Committee and Dean of School of International Education of Shanghai Jiaotong University.
